“The Last 5 Years” premiered last night during the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and the first reviews are getting released. While some reviews recognize some flaws in the movie they all praise Anna and Jeremy Jordan’s performance. We will round-up the reviews in this post and add more when more reviews are released.
“After watching “The Last Five Years” tonight, I am pleased to report that the film is brilliantly produced and directed. I initially had my doubts about Anna Kendrick taking on the role of Cathy. She proved she had singing chops in the film “Pitch Perfect,” but I was concerned she may not be able to give Jason Robert Brown’s complex score the treatment it deserves. Not only does Kendrick perform the score with great success from a vocal standpoint, she proves herself to be an impeccable actress capable of making you laugh in one moment and breaking your heart seconds later. Kendrick’s performance comes across as if the material had been specifically written as a vehicle for her. Jordan and Kendrick have incredible (and believable) chemistry together.” Alan Henry, Broadway World – September 8, 2014
Entertainment Weekly exclusively released the first movie clip of “The Last Five Years“. You can watch it below. The movie already got picked up for distribution and they are aiming for a February 14, 2015 release.
“You don’t have to get a haircut,” Anna Kendrick sings to her beloved in The Last 5 Years, “you don’t have to change your shoes.” And you don’t have to wait until the film’s 2015 release to get a taste of Kendrick as Cathy.
The Last 5 Years, directed by P.S. I Love You‘s Richard LaGravenese, is adapted from Jason Robert Brown’s Off-Broadway hit that follows a couple’s five-year relationship told almost exclusively through song—and also told from two different timelines. Cathy’s parts begin at the end of the relationship while Jamie’s (Jeremy Jordan) begin at the start of it, and the two story lines don’t collide until Jamie proposes.

THR is reporting that Radius acquired the rights to release “The Last 5 Years” in North America and they are planing a February 14, 2015 release.
In one of the first major acquisitions of the Toronto Film Festival, Radius has scooped up North American rights to the Anna Kendrick starrer The Last 5 Years.
Richard LaGravenese directed the film, an adaptation of the 2002 off-Broadway musical by Tony-winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown.
Jeremy Jordan (Smash) also stars. The move comes two days before the film makes its world premiere Sunday at the Ryerson Theater. The film’s two stars are veterans of the musical genre. Kendrick received a Tony nomination for High Society and starred in the breakout film Pitch Perfect and its upcoming sequel as well as Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods.
Jordan is also known for his stage roles in Newsies and the Broadway-bound Finding Neverland.
The Last 5 Years was produced by Lauren Versel of Lucky Monkey Pictures, Kurt Deutsch of Sh-K-Boom Records and Janet Brenner.
